In summary
An application icon will very quickly be associated with your application by the end user. Its task is not only to launch your application it also sums up what you are about.
Application icons contain cells for several individually drawn icon images for display in different sizes.What looks great in large usually doesn't in small, so we optimise each image for each of the standard sizes displayed on a user's screen. It is also important for the icon to have extra cells of graphics to be able to cope with different bit-depths.
